The Bug: Patriotism will live in us forever
November 27, 2017
Many of us are raised in an environment where the people who influence us are patriotic. Growing up, I was always around my grandfather, a person who has an infinite love for his country. He truly demonstrates the qualities of a patriotic person. My grandfather was in the National Guard for 37 years before he retired, he continues to perform civic duties each day, and has always saluted the American flag despite his country’s imperfections.
In my perspective, the men and women who serve our country are a perfect representation of people who have patriotism. They put their country’s protection before their own lives. For example, when my grandfather first became a part of the National Guard he was only a teen, but with his tremendous love for his country and ambition to protect, he was able to push through obstacles he faced on the battlefield. Not only did he give back to his country but was also an inspiration to others in my family that are now enlisted in the military. Seeing my grandfather fight for his country has been an experience that I hope every person can go through. It made me realize that even if my country makes mistakes, I should always remain loyal to it because there are people who would do anything for their country.
Although he has retired from the National Guard, his participation in civic duties have not stopped. My grandfather continues to obey the laws, attend jury duty, pay taxes, vote, etc. Additionally, he celebrates 4th of July and Veteran’s Day as a proud patriotic person who fought for his country. Those who uphold to their responsibilities as citizens show that they care for their country and only want it to succeed better than any other. The fact that my grandfather has not stopped giving shows his true compassion for his country. His constant participation in civic duties are a complete example of having patriotism.
Additionally, he has always saluted the American flag even before he was a part of the National Guard. In recent controversies, involving Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem instead of standing does not show true patriotism. I find this action to be very unpatriotic and disrespectful to those who fight for us all to have the opportunities we are given. In the U.S, we are all raised to respect the flag, but his argument was he does not support recent actions that the government has supported. In my perspective, if you have patriotism, you salute your flag even if you do not agree with your country’s decisions.
A patriotic person does not look at their country’s imperfections but rather all the good things it has to offer. We all have different definitions as to what having patriotism is like. Through my views and observations, my grandfather has qualities that represent being patriotic such as serving in the National Guard, continuing his civic duties, and respecting his country’s flag. Patriotism is a quality that will never be able to be destroyed as it will live always live in at least one citizen from each country.
