Cultural awareness is the main reason why VMT has its yearly 16 de septiembre performance.

Morning and afternoon students performed cultural dances and sang songs for the students and staff during performances on September 14.

“Cultural awareness is very important because of the diversity that we have in the country,” said dance instructor Alicia McKinnis, who also organized the event.

She explained how she and her students prepared for the event.

“It’s very short. In fact, I admired that the students are willing to do this as a project because basically we just had three weeks, and all the numbers that they prepared were new,” McKinnis said.

McKinnis said she liked how the audience supported the performers.

“(The audience) did great. They were very supportive and very appreciative,” she said.

McKinnis thanked the administration and teachers for their support.

Sophomore Salma Silva liked how the event allows students to celebrate their culture.

“It gives everyone a chance to show our culture,” Silva said.

Junior Janie Guerrero felt proud of her dance that represented a state in Mexico.

“While I was dancing I was proud to be representing Sones Antiguos from the state of Michoacan,” Guerrero said.
