Eliud Soto, high brass senior, felt grateful when he was selected for the TMEA all-state band.

“I felt blessed. I didn’t really have the reaction that everyone would have expected,” Soto said.

He states that his friends and family were joyful and supportive for him.

“My friends were very happy for me,” Soto said. “And my parents’ jaws were on the floor when I told them.”

I definitely see music in my future. I’m excited to see what’s in store for me.”

Soto, who studies with VMT music instructor Robert Lopez, said he is looking forward to performing with the all-state band.

“I’m grateful to be with the best in the state, and I can’t wait to perform with the band,” he said.

Soto said that he would practice almost every day until late at night.

“I would practice until one a.m., just working on the music until I felt like I was ready,” Soto said.

He states that this recognition can prove something to younger music players.

“This can show other musicians to never give up on their dreams, and to work hard,” Soto said.

Soto recommends aspiring musicians rehearse every day.

“I recommend performers practice whenever they can, until they are sure that they know the music,” He said.

Soto said that his family supports him in many ways.

“One of the ways that my family supports me is by tolerating my playing, especially when I play throughout the night,” Soto said.

Soto said that he became absorbed in music when he was younger.

“I became interested in music when I was seven. I was with my mom at church, and she started singing,” Soto said. “Her voice and the instruments playing in the background had made me realize that I wanted to play music.”

He said that his favorite part of the French horn is the variety.

“The thing I enjoy the most about the French horn is the range. The range can go from very high to very low, and I like the contrast between the notes,” he said.

He said that he sees music in his upcoming years.

“I definitely see music in my future. I’m excited to see what’s in store for me.”
