They came dressed as Boo and Nacho Libre. The crowd cheered them on. This was the afternoon Halloween Traditions Contest, sponsored by The Magnet Tribune staff.

The newspaper also sponsored a contest for morning students.

The Halloween day contest began with Most Original. Seven contestants walked around to show their costumes and to be judged by Magnet Tribune staff members.

Next followed Cutest, Scariest, Couples, and Funniest categories. For each, contestants walked around on the stage to present their costumes and be judged.

The Funniest costume category provoked laughter when sophomore Mark Escamilla showed off his costume. He was dressed as local blogger Gordiloca.

“Winning this contest was really a great experience to me. Mrs. (Aemie) Martinez inspired and motivated me to dress as la Gordiloca and it was perfect since I had recently cut my hair. All the class helped me get ready in just 20 minutes,” he said.

Another student enjoyed the contest in his first time at VMT.

“I feel great since it’s the first year here and the first time I participate. Mrs. Martinez also helped me to get ready last minute,” 2nd place winner in the Funniest category, senior Jesus Salazar said.

He was dressed as Jake from State Farm.

A spectator said she liked attending the contest.

“I really enjoyed attending to this contest because it was really awesome! Getting to see all the costumes that were being presented and all the contestants going extra on this was amazing. I hope to next year attend again and expect to have a great time just like I had today,” junior Nayelly Lizcano, member of the afternoon audience, said.
