Journalism students received several awards from the Texas Association of Journalism Educator's annual clip contest, called Best in Texas Contest. Students competed in online and print newspaper categories. Awards are Superior, Excellent, and Honorable Mention. Chess Club members earn two trophies

Students earned two trophies in the last chess tournament of the season on Saturday, March 4, announced Chess Club sponsor and social studies instructor Aemie Martinez. Rated players won 3rd place, while non-rated players won 2nd place, she said. Saul Castillo, a junior, placed 7th in the individual non-rated category. The following students represented VMT: Sherlyn Vargas, Israel Valadez, Saul Castillo, Max Hernandez, Lesly Rojas, Alfredo Gonzalez, Joshua Ramos, and Sylvia Martinez.

The Magnet Tribune’s website received a First Class Award from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). The First Class Award, received Sept. 17, is achieved when a website receives a score of 3,400 points or more. The Magnet Tribune scored a 3,440.
